I was doing my stuff at that moment, at the front of my ragged desktop computer, with the lights on, chips at my left side, with a nocturnal ambiance, sounds coming from the TV at the bedroom and from the CPU’s fan (silent yet distinguishable.) Roaming around facebook’s site, as usual, I spotted notes written by my favorite college teacher, Sir Jomar Cañega. It then captured my attention, for I am really looking for his creative works, and presto, they are now solid, I mean, at hand. I was really happy, and I started reading his writings.

The first one: In Quest of Our National Soul (Official Entry to the 2005Philippine Ombudsman Literary Contest)By: Jomar I. Cañega

Once in every race comes the misfortune of losing its culture, identity and even its national soul, and the Philippines is no exemption. The reign of colonial rule over the archipelago for several centuries had changed and transformed this country into a strange nation tagged as the only “westernized country in the east” to be exact. But what is ironic is that we seem to have adopted a culture that is neither western nor Asian, which explains why most Filipinos had been constantly asking the question – who I am?

Many scholars and intellectual luminaries have argued that the above mentioned question can best be answered in terms of culture which brings us to another question – what is culture?

Our beliefs in life, how we look at things, our daily practices and habits, our attitude towards others and towards nature – all these makes up our culture. A country is judge through its people. Therefore, if we are a slave to a culture of corruption, dishonesty, disunity, indolence and mediocrity then, that will be our identity as a people and as a race.

Over a century ago, some prominent figures in history both here and abroad have insulted and created a mockery of our race. The Spaniards accused us of being indolent. The great historian Larrousse made mention in his book that “the Filipinos is an effeminate race without virility which permitted without struggle the uprooting of its nationality, usages, customs, beliefs and even its language.” Even Deodato Arrelano, the very first Chief Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court, bluntly admitted to the schrumann Commision that the Filipinos did not understand what freedom is all about. Former Spanish Governor General Carlos Maria De La Tore said that the country should not be administered under the tenets of liberalism because according to him, “the Filipinos did not know nor cared to know what political liberties meant and only need economic, administrative, and educational reforms to keep the Philippines the most happiest colony in the world.”

But Dr. Jose P. Rizal had rectified those negative impressions about our people and said that such opinions were just products of mere ignorance of our country’s history. He cited that fifty years prior to the arrival of the Spaniards, the Philippines were already enjoying a state of abundance and prosperity both in political and economic terms. Trades with China, Borneo, Indonesia, Japan and the rest of Arabia already existed. Historical records from ancient Egypt pointed the Philippines as the official supplier of gold to the kingdom of the world famous King Solomon. So even then, we already have the reputation of being world class.

Since time immemorial, our national soul already existed in legends, traditions and history of our ancestors. They lived up with the norms of high ethical standards both in leadership and nationalism. Lapu-Lapu and Raja Soliman were testimonies of this when they risked their own lives in the front line of resistance against foreign domination.

Indeed, colonization painted an ugly face for all of us when our conquerors imposed their very own traditions against us and molded us after their culture of individualism, idleness, abuse of authority and corruption which explains why our beloved mother land is now stocked up and chained in poverty. A lot of internal conflicts now exist all over the country making it hard for us to move forward and cope up with the demands of modern day living. Unity still remains an elusive quest amongst Filipinos. Even the quality of public service has been tainted with incompetence and mediocrity making it difficult for our people to enjoy the kind of services that they deserve from the government.

Now it appears that courage, integrity and pride of our ancestors had only existed in legends. Their heroic deeds were put in oblivion in the hearts and minds of the new generation. When in the past a public office is a public thrust and decency and integrity were the main requirements for getting into public office, now it only takes guns, goons and gold and you are the boss.

Now we are facing an insurmountable challenge of retrieving our lost national spirit and we would surely have a hard time picking up the pieces of our broken race. But we will make it. And we shall make it! We can all dare to be different from the rest by changing our very own system of living. Although we cannot all be reformers of our people, we are endowed with the will power to change ourselves. So let us make use of our precious time for it is the only blessing given to mankind in equal measure. Henceforth we must prepare today for tomorrow will be our duty to serve our country.

In changing the whole structure of society, we must first change ourselves – the way we look at things, our attitudes and habits. We need a little bit of moral cleansing so all the toxic within us that has been contaminating our entire system can be cured at once!

But doing so is not an easy task. We cannot turn our backs or reverse the tides of mediocrity and corruption overnight. It takes a persistent and enduring heart to go on with the fight. Like the courage of the bull that still charges forward in spite of the sting of the blade being pricked into him by the matador. We must not lose the guts and spirit of trying and trying again. Let us not allow our failures and frustrations to discourage us and give up the fight.

Let us start cultivating the culture of courage, discipline, perseverance, love of work and country and self respect. Let us evade from the regular lethargic way of thinking of the majority. After all, only the evolution of another culture can subdue another culture. The battle has just begun and we are up for a tough fight for survival. There is no turning back for as what Gen. Douglas Mc Arthur once said, “Only those who are not afraid to die fit to live.” A man who will not defend his rights doesn’t deserve to be free.

We have to get rid of the “social cancer” that is widespread in our society as pointed out by Dr. Jose P. Rizal in “Noli Me Tangere.” It is a reality that we have to go through if we really want to reform this country. We are left with only two options – first is to act and second is not to act.” There should be no room for excuses this time. According to James Lowell, “Once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide. And in the strife between truth and falsehood, for good or evil, it is only the brave man that chooses while the coward stands aside.

Our record in the international arena will speak for our race. The world’s leading personalities in finance are mostly Filipinos. The world’s best engineers, doctors, economist, care givers and performing artists among others are mostly Filipinos. We have proven our worth in the world of humanity. The intelligence and creativity of a Filipino played a crucial role in the conquering of the moon when a Filipino engineer designed the “moon buggy” used by the Apollo 11. We have comets in the outer space named after a brilliant student from Manila Science High School. Above all, we have our own planet in the solar system named after Joset Talamera Biyo, the world’s greatest teacher in the field of Science and Technology.

Our journey to be on top of the world will become much easier to achieve if we can only recover our long lost national soul that will bind us as a race. And once we regain it, our national soul will become greater and will be enriched by our deeds that will be glorious and of great benefit to humanity!

It was amazing: the thoughts, the concept, the idea, almost everything. Really remarkable. He mentions these things always, during our discussions and no doubt, all of us are carefully listening to his unending words. Yes, it may seem endless, why? If you could witness him as he talks, probably, you can know. And that’s really awesome. Very wise and intelligent. This one’s kinda resembling Og Mandino’s. Nice one

This one’s another nice post, it gave me goosebumps. My deepest sympathy was drawned in a very good manner. Undeniably, Sir Jomar is one of the bests. His sense of Nationalism’s really amazing. If you could see, the deeper his words become, the deeper the meaning it portrays. He’s really good, very good. I salute him. There is also an enigmatic aura that covers his personality that would really make you want to dig more about him. Sir you’re really one of a kind.

This post is dedicated to Mr. Jomar I. Cañega

I have been on vacation mode on blogging these past few months. Yeah, and it was really annoying. I badly missed blogging. And I missed all the stuffs that I have been doing back when I am still on my high school days – surfing the net with unlimited time; staying at the pc until I refused to and devoting most of my time in blogging stuffs. Those things were really missed, so bad that I don’t know where to start. LOL.

But anyways, I just decided to come up with a song review, why? Nothing so controversial, I just noticed the painful lyrics it has. Really painful that I felt the guilt touched my skin and as if it has poisoned my veins. Just by hearing and understanding what the lyrics is portraying, my heart pumped and as if it has clogged my arteries.

The guilt and culpability of the past let me turned uncomfortable and regretful. I should have recognize this song long before, long before it’s too late. But what should I do now is to start accepting what life has to offer. And I should be happy. There’s nothing much to grieve about except for the melancholic approach of this song. It’s rude but it’s not bitter. The true meaning of LOVE was unleashed and explained in a very very very good manner.

Tragic, but lesson-emitting and it’s really truthful. We should realize that not all the persons who scold us are all having bad intentions with us. Sometimes, they are given to us to make us realize our faults and our unwanted manners. We should be thankful because we still have the chance to make a change. Give thanks to the person who stabs you at front. Don’t be upset; just face the truth and learn to accept the harsh fact, it’s for your own good. You can’t notice your own faults, others are way more observant of your moves. There are many valuable things that we can acquire from the internet. A click speaks louder. ^_^

With just a simple press you can be in. You can see the hidden world. You can see happiness though you’re alone. Whenever boredom strikes, you can find relief with this simple verb. Truly, even just one single click matters.

As my body departed my somewhat soft bed, an enigmatic feeling came in my thought. The decaying seed of yesterday’s failure keeps on haunting my senses. The unending wrath of my heart keeps on chaining loses at hand. How can I escape this pitiful labyrinth of darkness? Whew. I’m currently sitting along the shore, feeling the warm caress of the rough white sand, the pale moon is the only source of light, waves are crashing, a sign of an odd happening pending for occurrence.

I can feel the strong intense of loneliness inside, resulting in the formation of a droplet of water beside my glowing eye; a tear then existed and mysteriously opened some other world for me. As the other dimension’s door opened, I found myself wandering on an unfamiliar place. It was a little boy who caught my attention, I can’t clearly see his face, and all I noticed is that he’s being laid back by his peers, why? It all started when they’re talking about “what will they be?” in the future. A girl said she likes to be a nurse, the other girl said she likes to be a flight attendant, a naughty boy said he likes to be a chef. Now, it’s the boy’s turn, “I wanna be the Supreme Being, all of you will be under my power, you all, will bow your heads in my front and you’ll gonna give me your services.” I was stunned with his words, a strange outlook indeed. That’s the reason why the boy is being neglected. The boy was really upset; he’s really innocent why he likes to be what he wants. A very high-leveled dream. The boy shed tears, unaware that I watch every move he makes. Unexpectedly, he wiped his tears and gain courage to run. I don’t know where will he be going, I just followed him. Finally, we arrived at his destination – a shore. It was a familiar place now; I can see the sand where I always lay my tired body, the pale moon which gives me hope when I’m down and the pain-easing crashing waves. It’s my place, the place which have witnessed me when I’m happy and when I’m sad, it’s the place where I stay whenever I can’t hug my responsibilities. Yes, this is exactly my sanctuary, my haven…my place.

The boy’s talking to the spirit of the sea, unleashing all his hatred in the world; just like what I always do, I want to see his face, but I simply can’t, it’s very blurred and unnoticeable. I have heard all his sentiments, it’s like I’m watching my own video, I can relate on what he says, why? I merely don’t know why. I started to feel once again, the enigmatic aura in my veins, what is this I’m feeling now? My eyes are glowing; looking or even staring at the reflection of moon in the sea upon noticing his looks. His face – my face; the word identical crossed my mind. Yes, our faces show one attribute, one characteristic, one gene. I tried to come near him when I was awakened with reality. It was a dream, I’m currently sitting along the shore, I have realized why sometimes I’m being chilled out. Sighs… That’s a brilliant dream; the dream of my life; the dream of a strange being under this account. Geez.

A very much revealed intention, SHAMEFUL.

Have you heard something about the so-called con-ass thingy which was authored by 171 fucking legislators of our pitiful country? Absolutely, yes for sure. Yeah, it is indeed a very pathetic act. They [selfish congressmen] have now upgraded their true and dishonorable colors into apparently bleak ones.

It’s very much obvious that they only want things where they can benefit twice, trice or even on the nth degree of their basic salary. Why? Come to think of the amendments and programs they are setting aside just to satisfy their greediness. Even the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) which is a very useful act was hanged and was set aside. It’s too much. Why rush the things where only few -or should I use ‘them’- will benefit, when there are programs which can change the lives of many Filipino poor into goodness? Isn’t that very alarming?

Those 171 congressmen don’t deserve the votes they have received, they are our representatives, thus, their decision must reflect those of ours. Prioritizing their own likes is such a crap. It should be people first, they were elected to serve not to be served. Charter Change OVER CARP, sounds so irritating isn’t it? Can Charter Change support the landless Farm Workers? Definitely, NO!

What made this act very wrong is that it was passed in a very faulty way. Why? Because many people are against of it rather than ones who are in favor.

As what is stated on The Philippine Online Chronicles:

“I am very apprehensive that if the passage of this urgent legislation is delayed further, trouble may break out. The farmers have waited long enough and they are feeling desperate,” said Senate minority leader Aquilino Pimentel. “Clearly, it is the interest of this administration and not of the nation that is brazenly being pushed here,” Senator Francis Pangilinan told gmanews.tv. “We will oppose this latest caper, this latest shameless attempt at mangling the Constitution to serve the Arroyo regime.”

The Senate on Monday approved its version of the extension bill for CARP. The five-year extension includes “P147 billion and institutes reforms in the acquisition and distribution of lands and strengthening support services.”

CARP expired in June 2008 and was extended until December 2008. It was then issued a joint resolution by Congress because of its failure to accomplish a new law to replace it, and was extended until June 2009. Congress will adjourn on Friday, June 5.

Clearly stated that only the house committee are in favor of this useless law. Good thing, the Senate is working on this crappy and shameful issue. Thanks.

Lesson: Let us be meticulous on picking the right candidate to serve us. Don’t be blinded by their charm, pick the right and appropriate. And lastly, double check if your place’s congressman can serve you in the most proper way. Happy Thinking!

Just hours ago, I fetched my sister and cousin, 4:28pm, at their school. Flag retreat was currently ongoing. I had no choice but to take off my hat (patriotic much?) XD. I’m ashamed of the reactions the teachers there might have, if I did not took it off (they know me very well). Yeah, that’s the reason, Being patriotic is not on the list, I admit that I am a member of Dr. Jose Rizal’s so-called ’smelly fish group’, besides, (in the youth nowadays’ eyes) It’s a martyr act (corny much but it’s right).

Honestly, I don’t like it to go that way (really), that being martyr is a cheap (pinoy slang) or embarassing act (uber corny much, its too much) It’s like, a person-trying-to-be cool, but ultimately very uncool indeed, and often even extremely embarrassing. Just like what Avril Lavigne’s complicated says, ‘trying to be cool, you look like a fool to me’. Very unpatriotic.

Back to the fetching scenario, the whole time the Philippine National Anthem was playing, no vehicle showed respect, no driver cared to stop . You can see no trace of a patriotic aura even on passers-by. Students were very eager…not to sing but to go home. Sad, indeed, worse than economic recession (agree?)

Oh, June 12 is nearly approaching (A true filipino must know what’s with this day) By the way, we should now start to see the world around us. Let us be aware what is the past, present and future of our country. The saying ‘past is past’ is a crap in terms of love of country. We should at least give credits and respect to the heroes we owe. Be proud! I AM A FILIPINO.
